Travellers' Last Rights

This book explores issues related to death in a cultural context specific to Travellers and presents new research, specifically a Traveller mortality study combined with a small study of qualitative research undertaken among Travellers and service providers. It is intended that the information presented will help improve contact between Travellers and hospital staff, clergy, Gardaí, prison chaplains and funeral undertakers and to encourage the widespread adoption of culturally appropriate services for Travellers.

'I welcome this publication'; it is particularly timely. It’s neither a rant nor a panacea, but a detailed and measured outline of how a nomadic people can be marginalised within a culture like our own,and how their own culture is in danger of being subsumed by ours.
It is also a voice for the unheard and a challenge to those who havethe courage to hear and act. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all who are entrusted with providing culturally appropriate services to Travellers, particularly at times of illness, death and bereavement.(credited to Christy Kenneally)
