We work with Travellers to build a just, inclusive and welcoming community in and through faith

Knock is a very important place for Travellers. It is a place of pilgrimage, a Holy place and a place where people go to pray to Our Lady. Many years ago, families used to gather at the outskirts of Knock in August. The night before the 15th, they would make the journey in bare feet. Few follow this tradition today but many families still go there. It is the place where God hears prayers and intentions through Our Lady.

When I go to Knock I go to confession first, followed by the stations and then mass. When I’m there, I will get masses said and have candles lit for special intentions. When I am leaving, I buy religious things for other members of my family and bring back some holy water for protection and blessing.

Many go with worries, to pray for some special intention or to receive God’s blessing. The overall effect of visiting a place like Knock is the experience of peace and blessing, of being brought close to God again, through the love of Our Lady.

We all need times of beauty, moments of refreshment by which to be empowered.
