We work with Travellers to build a just, inclusive and welcoming community in and through faith

Saints and Relics

Travellers have a very strong belief in saints and relics. Most will have a special saint or saints to whom they pray. Sometimes that devotion will be passed on from one generation to the next. The family usually feels very close to their saints, who are like good friends to them.

The saints, I’d be lost without them. I grew up with St. Anthony, I feel like I know him. I’ve been talking to him all my life.

Travellers believe in relics. If they pray to a certain saint it is likely they will carry or have a relic or special prayer to that saint.

We ask for their protection for our children. Scapulars are very popular, especially for our own children. People also have crosses and medals.

The saint transforms the abstract claims of preaching, teaching and theology into vivid realities.
